Injury-plagued Manchester United will be looking to rebound from Saturday’s disappointing FA Cup exit this Tuesday evening as they host Tony Pulis’ Stoke City at Old Trafford. United have been installed as the heavy favourites for the contest at a best price of just 3/10 for victory with Bet365. Stoke are 13/1 with Stan James to upset the hosts and claim all three points. Betfred offer 9/2 on the draw.
Following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Liverpool, United’s chase for silverware this season has now been cut down to just two competitions, the Premier League and Europa League, with the Red Devils’ emphasis very much set on retaining the former. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were admittedly unfortunate to lose at Anfield on Saturday after outplaying the hosts for large periods but were punished for their lack of cutting edge in the final third. Meanwhile David de Gea continued his struggles between the sticks for United, which should see Anders Lindegaard restored to the starting XI for this evening’s encounter.
Wayne Rooney and Luis Nani were both distinctly missed on Saturday and unfortunately look set to miss out once again for the Champions to add to an already vast injury list including the likes of Ashley Young, Anderson, Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic. The hosts should however be able to welcome back Rio Ferdinand to the starting XI following his recovery from a back problem.
Stoke City head to Old Trafford after securing their place in the FA Cup fifth round with a 2-0 victory over Derby County at Pride Park on Saturday. Tony Pulis’ side are enjoying yet another fine campaign in 2011/2012; currently sitting eight in the League whilst competing in the latter stages of both the FA Cup and Europa League. The Potters have however been somewhat struggling for form recently in the league with only one win from their last eight matches and have not enjoyed a great recent record against the champions, having never beaten United in the Premier League.
In the correct score market, 2-0 to Man Utd is the favoured result at a best price of 6/1 with William Hill whilst 3-0 to the hosts is a 7/1 chance with Bet365. Stoke are 28/1 with Coral to win the match by a goal to nil whilst 2-1 to the visitors is a 33/1 shot at Stan James. Ladbrokes offer 10/1 on the 1-1 draw whilst a goalless affair is a 16/1 chance at SkyBet.
Man Utd/Man Utd is the 4/5 favourite in the Half-Time/Full-Time market with Bet365 whilst Draw/Man Utd is a 7/2 chance with Betfred. Stoke/Stoke is a standout 25/1 with Stan James whilst Draw/Draw is an 8/1 chance at Bet Victor. Man Utd/Stoke is a 100/1 longshot in the market with Boylesports.
Danny Welbeck, who has scored three goals in his last five league matches, is 9/2 at Bet Victor to break the deadlock between the two sides. Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, who has yet to find form this season after his impressive debut campaign, is a 4/1 chance to open the scoring with Ladbrokes whilst in-form Antonio Valencia is a 10/1 shot in the market with Bet365. England international Peter Crouch is Stoke’s top chance to grab the opener at 11/1 with Stan James.
The Match Kicks off at 2000 GMT.
